is not fully containment safe. Please follow the safety
recommendations given in the ASB until an upgrade kit or alternative technical
solution has been applied!
The following information summarizes the results of intensive investigations and testing to enable you to perform your own risk assessment related to your specific turbocharger type. This page will be updated regularly to supplement the information not yet available today; please visit this site again.
Further the table below provides an overview about feasible remedies to reduce or eliminate the risk of a loss of containment in the unlikely event of a rotor failure.
The figures to the right provide the individual risk value (risk of fatal injury) of engine crew member per turbocharger per year.
For turbochargers without any containment incident in the field, the average risk value of the corresponding series is used instead. The figure is provided in brackets.
(explanation marine applications)
2-stroke propulsion, favorable: (3.85E-7)
2-stroke propulsion, conservative: (1.50E-6)
4-stroke propulsion, single engine, favorable: (2.14E-7)
4-stroke propulsion, single engine, conservative: (9.84E-7)
4-stroke propulsion, multi engine: (3.85E-7)
4-stroke auxiliary: No application

Addendum to ASB_2013_02_18
We would like to underline that based on our documented field experience turbochargers of type NA48SM are operating very reliably and do not have an increased general risk of a rotor failure. We hope that the information provided above helps you in handling the situation until an upgrade kit or alternative solution has been installed. Once again, we want to express our regret for the inconvenience related to our ASB. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this effort to assure optimal containment safety of your MAN turbochargers.
